DTA-7918-02-18 : Caring for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) People with Dementia

This course assists health and aged care workers and organisations provide culturally competent and inclusive care and services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people with dementia.

Start Date: February 1, 2018

There are four modules:

  • Module 1 explores the range of sexual diversity within the Australian population. The key learning outcomes are to increase awareness of the term LGBTI and increase knowledge of key terminology.
  • Module 2 explores the lived experiences of LGBTI people. The key learning outcomes are to increase understanding of the discrimination experienced and raise awareness of some of the key issues that are still present today for by LGBTI people.
  • Module 3 highlights some of the considerations of care for older LGBTI people with dementia. The key learning outcomes are to improve awareness of the issues of health and wellbeing of LGBTI people, increase understanding of the considerations for providing care and to increase basic awareness of dementia and how it may impact on LGBTI people.
  • Module 4 identifies how organisations can become more LGBTI inclusive. The key learning outcomes are to raise awareness of the strategies organisations can use to become more culturally inclusive and to increase understanding of the resources that can support organisations to become more LGBTI inclusive.

Each module includes videos, readings and a quiz.

If your organisation achieves the formal Rainbow Tick Accreditation, it will be listed on a national register as an LGBTI-inclusive organisation.

Upon the successful completion of all four steps, learners are presented with a certificate confirming their participation in the program.

This course is estimated to take 6 hours to complete.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this program, participants will be able to:
  • describe the term LGBTI and key terminology
  • understand the discrimination experienced and some key issues still present for LGBTI people
  • increase basic awareness of dementia and how it may impact LGBTI people.
  • identify care considerations of older LGBTI people with dementia
  • identify how organisations can become more LGBTI inclusive
  • access resources that support organisations to become more LGBTI inclusive.
