CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
Dementia Essentials is a free, 3-day nationally-accredited dementia education course. Delivered in person, it’s suitable for those working in aged care, health care and community services.
Dementia Essentials courses take place in every Australian State and Territory, and run year round. Browse upcoming course dates in your preferred state or territory below.
During this course, participants will gain an understanding of:
Person-centred care and effective communication
The nature of dementia and its impacts
Identifying unmet needs
Understanding changed behaviours and developing effective responses
Activities to promote well-being; and
Workplace issues, community support and services available
This dementia education course includes theory and practical components to be completed during the course delivery.
How is the course assessed
Assessment comprises an “open book” in-class written assessment followed by a workplace supervisor observation checklist. The observation checklist provides evidence towards the participant demonstrating their learning in their practice, supporting 2 people living with dementia. Workplace observation sign off will be the responsibility of the participant’s supervisor.
Dementia Essentials is a course which maps developing skills onto the Inquiry and Implementation streams of the DTA Learning Pathway.
The goal of the course is promote early foundation skills which promote thinking about dementia and support change in practice for ‘doing’ on the DTA knowledge translation framework.
Qualification / Accreditation
Dementia Essentials is a Vocational Education and Training (VET) level qualification. It refers to the Unit of Competency named CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia. While it is a stand alone course, Dementia Essentials sits within the broader training programs covered by Certificate III Individualised Support/Ageing and Certificate IV Aged Care.
Certificate / Statement of Attainment
Statement of Attainment will be issued by Dementia Australia VIC Inc. RTO CODE:2512.
You MUST be able to undertake a workplace assessment under supervision, interacting with people with dementia in order to complete the course. The completed competency can be credited towards further study in aged care.
This nationally funded Dementia Training Australia program is delivered by Dementia Australia.

If you don’t receive an email after registering for a course, please know that you can always access your courses and pending enrolments in your DTA Profile.
How to access a course in your DTA Profile
Log in to your DTA Profile (button website top right)
Click My Courses
You will see a list of your current courses, completed courses and pending course enrolments.
To begin a course, visit the Current Courses tab > click the green ‘Go to Course’ button
Note: Pending enrolments are approved the morning of the course start date. Once this approval process occurs, you will receive an email containing information on how to get started. At this time, you can also access/begin your course by visiting your DTA Profile > My Courses > Current Courses > Click green Go to Course button
All course enrolments remain Pending until the morning of the course start date. At this time, pending course enrolments are approved, and an email is sent to learners containing information on how they can get started.
At this time, you can also access/commence your course by visiting your DTA Profile > My Courses > Current Courses > Click green Go to Course button
Click the Sign Up button in the top right of the screen
Enter your details in the form
Create a Username, and Submit your details
Your new DTA password will be emailed to the email address you entered during sign up.
